RUBY BRIDGES WALK TO SCHOOL DAY 2024!

Children and adults gathered in a group in front of an elementary school wearing purple.

On November 14th, 2024, over four thousand Salem-Keizer Public School students walked routes around their schools to commemorate Civil Rights icon Ruby Bridges.

At 6 years old, Ruby became the first African American student to attend an all-white school in New Orleans, Louisiana. Her historic steps into William-Frantz Elementary in 1960 marked the beginning of integration in the U.S. Education system.

Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day is meant to be a day of dialogue. Students are encouraged to have conversations about anti-racism, anti-bullying, and activism.

Thank you to all students, parents/guardians, school staff, and community members that participated in our 3rd annual Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day.

Program Mission:

The mission of Salem-Keizer Safe Routes to School is to enhance accessibility for walking, biking, and rolling to and from school. We strive to empower students and their families by providing the essential education and resources needed to engage in multimodal transportation.

Advocacy: To continue advocating for safer streets for all adults and children in the Salem-Keizer area. We hope to do this by applying The 6 E’s in all the work that we do.

Education: We strive to provide participating schools with the resources and coordination to teach pedestrian, bike, and public transit safety.

Engagement: As schools educate students about safety, we aim to practice and model it through events like walking and bike buses. We are part of a movement to continually raise awareness in our community by interacting with families at Parent Teacher Organizations (i.e., PTAs, PTCs), and participating in resource fairs and other community events.
