Pedestrian Safety Classes
We are visiting all the elementary schools in Salem-Keizer to teach pedestrian safety during PE classes. Our two-day curriculum covers the following topics:
Who pedestrians are
Pedestrian vocabulary
Communicating with other road users
Crossing the street
With and without crosswalks
Using Walk/Don’t Walk signs
Pedestrian rights
In 2022, we taught classes at sixteen elementary schools and nine in 2023. Pedestrian Safety will now be put into the 2023-2024 PE curriculum within Salem-Keizer Public Schools, and we will continue to teach at all elementary schools.
We are also developing bicycle safety classes, and ODOT is gearing up to offer Train the Trainer programs to educate teachers and community members about how to teach bicycle and pedestrian safety.
